Because the search feature is built on top of the Alpheios project and through that, Whitaker's Words, there are some quirks to the search results, which we have no control over. These are listed below:
Capital words return stock phrase
If a word is not found, you'll typically receive a "Search term not found" result. However, if the word begins with a capital letter, Alpheios returns a message that says "Assume this is capitalized proper name/abbr." At times this may be true. However,if the word is the first word in the sentence, then it more likely indicates the word is unrecognized.
Duplicate results
If a word matches multiple parts of speech, you'll sometimes get duplicate results instead of a single result listing all possible uses. Likewise, you'll sometimes get duplicate results for adjectives that list both the dictionary entry and an entry with the comparative and superlative forms appended to the term.
Our search tool relies primarily on the tools developed by the Alpheios Project and Logeion. We encourage all readers to explore those projects to learn more about their great work.
